Rudd’s 2020 & Sustainable Masculinity working to counter negative trends like Gladiators, Corey Worthington, girl gang violence
There is an ancient wisdom which suggests that everyone and everything is deeply connected to everyone and everything.
Determined to improve masculinity and create a culture of peace and partnership, many wonderful Aussi blokes are adopting nurturant/partnership models. It is ironic that while such men are working hard to embrace a healthier form of masculinity and improve themselves, the dysfunction of the old male dominator (sometimes called the patriarchal) societal model continues to appear in new forms - I am talking about the surge in girl gangs, Gen Y violence, binge drinking, obscene drug use and weird TV shows. What is the connection?
In 1939, when Hitler came to power, a man called Stein, disturbed by what he saw regarding the increasing use of mind altering drugs by the Nazi party and their fascination for black magic, made the prediction that if the youth of the West became users of such drugs the world would see a massive decline in human values.
I think Stein was right. How bizarre when teenagers men like Corrie Worthington earn big money by cashing in on their fame - the kide who defied his parents, helding to hold a riotous party which the police were called to.
How bizarre when Gladiators and Big Brother are the most popular TV shows. Why are we seeing more girl gangs and why is Gen Y regarded as the most violent generation? What type of society are we breeding and what do we do about it?
I applaud Kevin Rudd’s initiative to curb teen binge drinking as I applaud 2020 as efforts to solve the problems. I’d like to see more attention paid to the root causes of such issues.
My mandate is to help boys and men build healthy models of masculinity, models which do not destroy the planet, a susatainable masculinity. It is not my place to tell girls how to be women, or tell women how to be, but it seems society needs to draw on the values of good men and women and take a good look at what type of society we want to create.
